Trees. Volume 1 : “In Shadow”

Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive.

Being a comic book fan sometimes means that you don’t get the full story that the creators intended, and I guess as much as the world loves Warren Ellis, that same world didn’t care for his “aliens among us, but it’s not a story about aliens, about the people” type of story that I completely loved. The story is as much about the people as it is the alien structures and what their plans on, but the series ended suddenly with issue #14, all the plots and stories from it were discarded and a short mini series followed up the world with a story about a murder in a small Russian village. It was a fine story, but I really wanted to read more about the Trees themselves and what they’re actually doing on Earth.
