Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers: Directed by Akiva Schaffer. With Andy Samberg, John Mulaney, KiKi Layne, Will Arnett. Thirty years after their popular television show ended, chipmunks Chip and Dale live very different lives. When a cast member from the original series mysteriously disappears, the pair must reunite to save their friend.

This is hands down one of the most bonkers films that I’ve ever seen. Remember when Roger Rabbit came out and everyone was shocked at how well Bob Costas did with an animated co-start? Well here in CnD, it’s animation, early CGI, uncanny valley CGI, modern 3d cgi, and claymation, all in the same movies, often all at the same time. It’s also one of most self referential and self aware movies that I’ve ever seen, rising above anything that Ryan Reynold could only dream of.

If there’s one quibble that I have, it’s that they’re using a completely incorrect definition of “bootleg”, which is to say that a bootleg version of something is trying to be the original thing but doesn’t quite hit the mark. Maybe the definition shifted to “doing the same thing just slightly different to escape copyright law” but I missed it if that happened.

There’s at least a couple dozen franchises, movie series, televisions series, or production studios here, and only about one tenth of them are owned by Disney, I have no clue how they cleared all the rights for this film, but I’m super happy that they did.

Oh and there’s one scene where four characters played by one VO person and it’s glorious.
