“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” Season 1 Review

A young group of cadets come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

I often thought this series was gorgeous, particularly the spaceship content, but it was still wrapped in the visual style of Star Trek: Discovery, with overly reflective floors, walls, and air. The stories were much better than Disco, but the first season was bookended by some of the same types of story settings that I hated so much in Picard, with a Federation that was uncaring and cruel. It made no sense in Picard and it makes even less sense here in a collegiate setting.

The series had an initial order of two seasons and it was recently announced that’s going to be it. Maybe they’ll turn it around for season 2, but I wasn’t impressed by season 1.
