I’ve seen both versions of the film, both the happy ending and the not so happy ending, and I’ve read King saying that he was happier with either of those endings than he was with the ending he came up with and I’ll have to agree with him on that point. The rest of the novel is pretty well written, as most of Kings stories are, and he managed to write the story tightly enough that there were no real meandering parts, but like most of his stories the ending just happens and feels like it could have been handled in a more finite way instead of the nebulous “and then we went on” type of situation he went with.
