Popeye
I understand that you don’t always get to pick your first role as an actor, and you definitely don’t get to have editing calls, but this film is a complete a waste of time, potential, and possibility. This is the type of thing that people can point to and say “this is the movie that set back comic book adaptations by 40 years”. The casting is nearly perfect in every aspect, but with that perfect casting comes slavish dedication to perfect characterizations with no consideration for the change in medium that would necessitate such a thing. In the comics and original cartoon, Popeye can be barely understood, which is translated to Robin Williams being nearly unintelligible for the entire film.
Also, I don’t remember the town that Popeye being a musical town in the cartoons, so making this into a musical was a stupendously weird choice. I say this in all honesty, the best part of the film was watching Bluto swim away from the camera for 10 minutes while the credits rolled.
