Hulk: Directed by Ang Lee. With Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, Josh Lucas. Bruce Banner, a genetics researcher with a tragic past, suffers an accident that causes him to transform into a raging green monster when he gets angry.
I forgot it opened with biological testing instead of radiation, but I do remember there being some weird stuff in the comics later in the 90s talking about how his father did all sorts of testing and it was only because of the genetic augmentations that permitted Bruce Banner to survive the gamma bomb. I need to point out that I hated this when it happened in the books and it doesn’t look much better here.
And notes! The whole first ten minutes of the movie is just a kid growing up and his dad taking notes about his kid growing up. Then an explosion, and bad stuff happens, and suddenly the kid’s all grown up and doing the same kind of research that his father was doing. It’s here that we see they’re using the revised origin from the television series instead of the original bomb origins from the comic book.
Ultimately this is still a movie that never really did it for me. There’s all sorts of cool editing tricks and multicamera set ups that are admittedly brave and unique but don’t work in a movie. Doesn’t help that Hulk looks so baby faced compared to his later iterations.
