It’s finally here: the movie that looked interesting enough to watch, but not die for by going to a theater during a global pandemic! It’s a perfectly fun movie that’s perfectly swell for what it is, which is a slightly better version of Ready Player One, in which this time it’s not Warner Brothers, but instead it’s Fox / Disney that’s throwing all the video game metaphors at our face in rapid fashion, hoping to god that something sticks or hits the zeitgeist. Luckily it works somewhat better than other efforts in just throwing all of a studio’s IPs in an blender and throwing it all up on the screen at the same time (Space Jam was the worst version of this so far to my mind). It doesn’t hurt that it starred Ryan Reynolds, one of America’s finest sweethearts, who’s likely secretly a cannibal or something horrid like that.
Good rental if you find it cheap!
