Eyes on the Prize: Hallowed Ground

Eyes on the Prize: Hallowed Ground: Directed by Sophia Nahli Allison. Profound exploration of the journey of Black Liberation though the actors of the movement.

The original “Eyes On The Prize” mini series was a ground breaking, in depth, and well researched piece of media that came out in the early 1980’s but I only watched relatively recently in 2017. It’s available to view on HBO Max, so if you haven’t seen it, I still strongly suggest checking it out, it’s among the best documentaries that I’ve ever seen. This update though, is just a mess of artistic license, spoken poetry, and vague hints of updates to the story and I feel it does a disservice to the original series and should have been named something else. There’s little to connect to two documentaries, and very little information on what’s happened since the original series. There’s plenty of artsy fartsy dancing and wacky visuals, but only vague hints of the ongoing struggle that minorities continue to face throughout the US. I want THAT show, one that goes into detail on the deaths, the tortures, the executions, the who, where, when, and whys of what happened in place like Furguson, Atlanta, Minnesota, or even in Florida. Instead they just mention the locations in a quick montage, leaving the viewer just as uninformed as when they started watching the movie.

Skip the new one, watch the original.
