Directed by David Lynch. With Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Francesca Annis, Leonardo Cimino. A Duke’s son leads desert warriors against the galactic emperor and his father’s evil nemesis when they assassinate his father and free their desert world from the emperor’s rule.
A masterpiece of movie making, it hasn’t aged poorly, but it’s clearly from a time and place that doesn’t exist any more. I’m reading the book this movie is source from and so far it’s a pretty spot on adaptation. My wife mentioned she hadn’t seen it before and I found it cheap online, so we spent the better part of three hours wallowing in epic 80’s high fantasy science fiction.
There’s a new adaptation coming soon, it’ll be interesting to see what they end up doing with the story. This original film obviously ends on a note that could have been used for a sequel, but I don’t think that sequel was ever produced.
